Nearly 30 years ago, Color Touch Painting, a San Francisco based house painting contractor, started offering painting services, mainly in San Francisco. Today we operate throughout the Bay Area, focusing in San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda and Contra Costa counties. We have had a lot of experience mixing custom colors, adjusting colors and helping hundreds of clients choose the right color scheme for their home. When mixing colors, it is important to think about complementary colors, which will “pop” when placed side-by-side, or which will cancel each other out when blended together. Complementary colors are opposites on the color wheel. Side by side, they create pop not just in nature, but on a house exterior as well! The main examples of complementary are red and green, blue and orange, purple and yellow. We often use pop and blend aspects of complementary colors from nature to help us choose color palettes.

Recently we were asked to provide exterior house painting services on a contemporary Bernal Heights house in San Francisco, CA. The owner was initially contemplating a green/cream color scheme, but during our color consultation process, we were able to steer them towards a combination that had a lot more pop, using blue and brown.

While choosing the colors for this home, we were inspired by a trip to Point Reyes. On nature’s canvas, colors like blue, brown, gold, purple and green really work well together. We borrowed from this inspiration and created the blue/brown palette pictured below. Of note: blue and orange are complementary colors.
